Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses (RGP)
This is a different type of contact lens, made of a different material, therefore it is not soft, but rigid and almost inflexible. This type of lens can be used in cases of myopia, hyperopia but its' basic use is for the correction of the astigmatism. A different type of cleaning is neccesary and there are specific cleaning products for the RGP lenses only.
Advantages:
- High oxygen permeability (much higher than any soft contact lens) that means the eye gets much more oxygen. This is accompished not only because of the material but for the reason it is also much smaller than the soft contact lens.
- Greater lifetime .
- Healhtier. There is much less probability for infections than the soft contact lens because the material does not absorb water and deposits, so there is ess chance for the microbes to grow.
Disadvantages
- You get to feel them more in your eyes, at least
for the new users. But in time you get used to them.
- Not suitable for sports
or similar activities, because they can be removed from your eyes
relatively easily by accident.
