Soft
Contact Lenses
With
this type of contact lenses we can correct myopia (farsightedness)
and hyperopia (nearsightedness). But soft contact lenses are not
all the same. Types of soft contact lenses are:
1.Normal contact lenses for daily use (lenses that soud be
removed at the end of the day and get cleaned for the next use)
and
2. Extended wear soft contact lenses (lenses that can be
used for more than one day without removing them).
The basic difference between these two categories is their water
containment. In the first category we have all the soft contact
lenses with water containment up to 38%. In the second category
belong the soft contact lenses with water containment 55% - 74%.
The greater water containment of a soft contact lens
provides a higher oxygenation (oxygen permeability) and therefore
you can use them for a prolonged period of time. But there are some
restrictions. Not eeveryone can use soft contact lenses with high
water containment. that is because these lenses demand more water
for your eyes (tears), than the other category, in order to be confortable
and keep their proper form. Otherwise they tend to dry out. On the
other hand, there are individual differences on the quantity and
the quality of the tear secretion. Therefore only your optometrist
can decide (after he has conducted the appropriate tests) if you
can use this type of contact lenses.
